May 12 – Florence Nightingale Day

May 2020 marks the 200th Birthday of Florence Nightingale. She is the pioneer of nursing as we know it today. As we navigate through a worldwide pandemic it is fitting we honor this Historic woman, and every nurse that has followed in her footsteps since. May 12th is International Nurses day.

When Florence went into nursing it was considered dirty work. Respectable women just didn’t do it. Medicine wasn’t practiced the way it is now. Florence is famous for inspiring the simple act of hand washing ! In her book Notes on Nursing written in 1860, Florence tells nurses they should wash their hands as often as possible, their faces too! At the time it was believed infection was caused by bad smells!

The hand washing and other hygiene principals Florence and her team implemented in British army hospitals during the Crimean War were responsible for marked improvements in recovery. Believe it or not it wasn’t until the 1980s that hand hygiene is recognized globally as a critical component to preventing infection.
