March 25 – Tolkien Reading Day

Have you ever read the Hobbit or the Lord of the Rings trilogy? They are wonderful classics that have delighted readers for years.

Some may find reading them a bit challenging. In that case there are audio versions available!

March 25th is set aside as Tolkien reading day by the Tolkien Society. It is designed to encourage reading Tolkein’s works in homes and classrooms.

According to the Tolkien Society website, March 25th was chosen because The 25th of March was the downfall of the Lord of the Rings (Sauron) and the fall of Barad-dûr.

In case you are not familiar, Tolkien wrote more than just the Lord of the Rings…

Some of our favorites at the Happy Hive are:

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight – A modern translation of the Middle English romance from the stories of King Arthur. I would say this is a High School Level book or beyond

Beowulf was challenging for my 9th grader, but he stuck with it and ended up loving it by the end.

Letters From Father Christmas is a book I believe every house should have, just as special as the Night Before Christmas. These letters are written in Tolkien’s own writing – to his children from Father Christmas and tell tales of the adventures of the North pole.

Tolkien was also know for making his own languages. The most famous of those being Elvish. These are the languages spoken by the tribes of Elves that are in the Hobbit, and the Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

Perhaps to celebrate today you can read, or listen to the writing of Tolkien.

If you would like to take a stab at language invention there are some books that will help. It’s a great goal !

On a basic level, language invention begins with the invention of an alphabet, so I have this FREE download for you to create your own alphabet! That should bring the celebrating into more households 🙂

If you would like the full activity packet for Read J.R.R. Tolkien Day it is available for purchase in our Teachers Pay Teachers store as well as on Amped Up Learning. Check it out along with the other curriculum available!
