Friday the 13th

Friday the 13th is one of may superstitions associated with bad luck. Others include opening an umbrella indoors, breaking a mirror and walking under an open ladder.

When did Friday the 13th begin to be associated with being an unlucky day?

According to History.com, it’s not known exactly when Friday the 13th became an unlucky day, but the number 13 itself has been associated with such superstitions for centuries.

The fear can also be traced back to Christian theology. There were 13 people at the Last Supper, and Judas, the one who betrayed Jesus was the 13th (last) to arrive.

Friday is also the day on which Jesus was crucified. It has also been said that Eve gave Adam the apple in the Garden of Eden on a Friday and the Great Flood when Noah built his Arc began on a Friday.

Hotels don’t have a 13th floor (and even some other tall buildings) because of what is called : Triskaidekaphobia. Triskaidekaphobia is a severe fear of the number 13. It is much more than just a mild discomfort, or the belief that the number 13 is unlucky. People diagnosed with Triskaidekaphobia can experience anxiety and a sense of panic when faced with the number 13, the 13th of the month or even staying on the 13th floor of a hotel.
